Drexel University and the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Parks and Recreation are embarking on a multi-faceted partnership aimed at greening the West Philadelphia community surrounding Drexel University. Participating in the announcement on April 18, on the University’s campus, were Mayor Michael A. Nutter; John A. Fry, President, Drexel University; Michael DiBerardinis, Deputy Mayor for Environmental and Community Resources; Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell, 3rd District; and Rick Young, President and CEO, Mantua Community Improvement Committee.

The collaboration supports Mayor Nutter’s Greenworks Philadelphia plan, which includes planting 300,000 new trees by 2015, and capitalizes on the University’s resources and academic expertise to significantly impact neighborhoods in West Philadelphia and beyond. Program elements include the greening of several playgrounds in the Mantua section of the City, the giveaway of 200 trees to Drexel employees living in Philadelphia, and the creation of new storm water treatment systems for local parks and playgrounds, designed and implemented by the University’s environmental engineering students.

MCIC and Drexel University students worked together to clean the streets of Mantua during April 2nd city-wide clean-up day. But of course, MCIC’s work to keep Mantua clean doesn’t end there. We are hosting our 2nd annual block by block cleanup effort. We encourage neighbors to come out with us every Saturday to clean their streets. The schedule is posted on the front page of our website.

Looking for a summer job? MCIC will host Summer Youth Interns through the Work Ready program. You can apply now, the program starts July 5th through August 12th. Last year, we had 7 students that worked with our cleaning and greening team. Their project was to design the ultimate classroom. The students learned about sustainable building materials and took a field trip to Greenable to pick out materials for the space. The end result was a beautifully designed space that will house our Youth Entrepreneurship Program (Ryyda).

On April 30th MCIC along with Drexel University, UC Green and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation will come together with the community to green Miles Mack Playground. Miles Mack was a hero in the community and the playground was renamed in his honor in 2009. We are excited about being a part of this effort. We will have a day of fun including tree planting, light outdoor painting and cleaning up. All participants will receive t-shirts and lunch. If you are interested in participating please contact MCIC to volunteer. See below Miles Mack tribute video.
